The Minister of Finance and Economy, Mr. Arben Ahmetaj and the Director of the KfW (German Development Bank) Office, Mr. Björn Thies signed the agreement enabling a funding of 1.95 million euros to conduct preliminary investment studies regarding water supply and sewerage in around 11 municipalities across the country.
The Water Sector Performance and Investing Program is a joint initiative of the Albanian government, the German government, the European Union and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Relations (SECO) through KfW.
With envisaged funding of up to 130 million euros, this program aims to build a performance-based, already successful, investment mechanism at sectoral level. Water supply and sewerage enterprises in the 11 selected municipalities will be supported in order to reduce losses and provide a better service for the citizens. At the same time, enterprises will need to improve their performance and cover costs to enable these investments to be sustainable and can be used and maintained for years to come.
